The above links demonstrate a basic navigational structure using an unordered list styled with CSS. Use this as a starting point and modify the properties to produce your own unique look. If you require flyout menus, create your own using a Spry menu, a menu widget from Adobe's Exchange or a variety of other javascript or CSS solutions.

If you would like the navigation along the top, simply move the ul.nav to the top of the page and recreate the styling.

Karnes County

The picture above is of the County Courthouse in Karnes County.  It is actually the second Courthouse in Karnes County, with the first being in Helena.

Helena, Texas

Just northeast of present day Karnes City, there is a small gathering of buildings in the middle of the scrub mesquete and post oaks, Helena, Texas.  Helena was one of the cowtowns created when the railroad was projected to come through the town.  Needless to say the town was a rowdy cowtown, lots of saloons and drinking.  The town was of such importance it was voted and declared the County Seat of Karnes County, a building built and occupied by the county officials.  One day there was a shooting with one of the shooters being a Ruckman boy, he was killed, his father came to town demanding the man that shot him.   Mr Ruckman's objective was to hang the young cowboy.  The town refused to turn over the cowboy, since it had been declared a fair fight and the cowhand was not held.

Mr Ruckman still demanded the cowboy so he could hang him, the town refused.  At this time Mr Ruckman said he was going to kill the town.  He followed up on his threat.  The roadbed of the railroad was not set, so Mr Ruckman gave the right of way to the railroad company if they would route the track away from Helena.

The deal was cast and signed, the railroad now ran, not through Helena, but southwest to Karnes City.  Over a very short time, after the railroad went through, the town of Helena slowly faded, like a flower in the hot Texas summer.  Eventually the County Seat was moved to Karnes City, and the town further faded into history and memories of locals.

You can still see the remnants of the town, just drive to Helena and drive around, the State Historical Society has placed markers there telling the story and there is a small museum at the old County Seat.

Footer

Adding a footer following the columns, yet still inside the .container, will cause this overflow:hidden clearing method to fail. You can place a .footer into a second .container outside the first one with no detrimental effects. The simplest choice may be to start with a layout containing headers and footers and remove the header to utilize the clearing methods in that layout type.

Backgrounds

By nature, the background color on any div will only show for the length of the content. If you'd like a dividing line instead of a color, place a border on the side of the .content div (but only if it will always contain more content).
