My Naval Career
The end of my Army career was at Ft. Hood Texas, when a re-enlistment NCO offered me a choice (you never want to hear one of those guys offer you a choice) Either Re-Up and back to Nam for my third tour, or out. I smartly did an about face and walked right out of his office.
II worked for a Uranium Mine here in South Central Texas, after my fill of that, I took some college courses at San Antonio College. During this time I had two jobs, first one as a stock handler at the Union Stock Yards and when I could not work there and go to college, I worked for Kallisons Farm and Ranch Store.
I tired of that and joined the Navy, first being sent to Charlston NC for my outfitting, and next to NAS Millington (NATTC) for training. (Avionics Tech) See first graphic at right.
My first assignment after training was VS-30, the Diamond Cutters,or as many other units knew us The Dirty Thirty. I supported the S-2 Tracker Aircraft, eventually transitioning to the S-3 Viking aircraft. Most of the tour was in Aviation Intermediate Maintence Department, preforming Depot level maintenance on Avionic equip. Though I did get to see such fun and sun things as the USS Lexington, Beeville NAS, NAS Pensicola and other places
I was transferred from VS-30 to NAS Corpus Christi Naval Air Station AIMD, in the Avionics Shop.
When my enlistment was up, I joined the Naval Reserve as a Reserve Recruiter, and later as an Active Duty Recruiter.
My final assignment was with HS-8, a helicopter anti-submarine unit, also known as the Eightballers.
Did some deployments aboard the Connie (CV 64) and other carriers.
I was medically discharged from the Navy at this point with back, knees and PTSD (from Nam).
